Riga is Latvia’s political, economic, and cultural center and the primary base for SRAS programs in the Baltics. Latvian is the country’s official language, while Russian remains widely spoken, giving students daily exposure to the multilingual environment that shapes questions of language, identity, media, and society in contemporary Latvia.
The city’s urban landscape reflects multiple layers of Baltic history. Medieval streets and churches, Art Nouveau architecture, Soviet-era neighborhoods, and contemporary European development coexist within a relatively compact capital, while museums, memorials, cultural institutions, and public spaces provide further perspectives on Latvia’s history and changing society.
Riga as a Gateway to the Baltics
Riga’s central position in the Baltics and strong transportation connections make it a practical base for exploring Latvia and neighboring Estonia and Lithuania. Academic and independent travel allows students to encounter different languages, historical experiences, cultural traditions, and contemporary societies while maintaining Riga as their primary study location.
Within Latvia, travel beyond the capital reveals significant regional differences as well. Smaller cities, coastal communities, historic towns, and the multilingual environment of Latgale provide perspectives on the country that differ considerably from those encountered in Riga.

Student Life in Riga
Student life in Riga extends well beyond the historic center. Markets, cafés, parks, riverside spaces, cultural events, and neighborhood gathering places offer plenty to explore, while the city’s manageable size makes it easy for students to establish their own routines. Cultural activities, festivals, and excursions throughout Latvia add further opportunities to experience life beyond the classroom.
The program here is wonderful. All of my teachers have been extremely helpful and I have made friends both here in the dorms and with others who live in the city and find that I often have many opportunities to practice Russian outside of the classroom. Already I feel that my Russian has improved immensely, especially my listening and speaking.
