A Language Pathway into Central Asian Life and Culture

Bishkek offers one of the most effective environments for studying Russian in a real-world, regionally integrated context. In Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Russian is used widely in daily life, from cafés to markets and public transport.

Daily, practical use will enhance your language skills while you study Russian in an intensive, small-group setting. Through coursework, peer tutoring, and a dynamic cultural program, you will engage directly with local communities and apply your language skills in everyday situations. Optional homestays provide additional opportunities for sustained language use and cultural exchange.

This program is designed for students who want to prioritize language acquisition while gaining insight into the geopolitically important and culturally rich Central Asian region. Russian forms the core of the academic experience, with options to add elective coursework and/or regional travel. Students should have completed at least two semesters of college-level Russian (or equivalent) to enroll.

For those seeking a more immersive and mobile experience, the summer RSL + Travel Adventure track combines language study in Bishkek with a faculty-led travel component across Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This track requires at least four semesters of Russian (or equivalent).

Semester students seeking a broader interdisciplinary and travel-based curriculum may also consider the Central Asian Studies program.

Language in Context

In Bishkek, Russian functions as a shared language, as it does across Central Asia. Russian is widely used in higher education, business, government, and cross-border communication, connecting people across Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and beyond.

While Kyrgyz is the official state language, Russian also holds official status and remains central to urban life and regional interaction. Studying here allows you to experience Russian as it is used across institutions and borders—not only as a subject of study, but as a working language for navigating diverse cultural and professional environments.

Program Details

Class size is very small in this program with maximum of 6, but are usually smaller. Peer tutoring and other activities are integrated with your curriculum and intended to introduce you to the culture and community in Bishkek. 

RUSS 293/393/493 Russian Language Study

You will develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through intensive, small-group instruction. Coursework emphasizes practical communication, supported by conversation practice and regular use of Russian in daily life. In Bishkek, Russian is widely used across the city, allowing you to reinforce classroom learning through consistent, real-world interaction.  
Fall/Spring: 12 credits; Summer (10 weeks): 12 credits; Summer (8 weeks): 10 credits; Summer (6 weeks): 7 credits / Prerequisite – at least 2 semesters of college-level Russian (or equivalent)

Elective Language Options

Semester studentsmay take up to two electives.
Summer studentsmay take one elective at additional cost ($750).

All electives are 3 credits and subject to prerequisites.

  • Phonetics for Beginners. Prereq – none
  • Phonetics through Soviet Cartoons. Prereq of at least 2 semesters of Russian
  • Russian through Fairy Tales and Cartoons. Prereq of at least 4 semesters of Russian
  • The Golden Age of Russian Literature. Prereq of at least 4 semesters of Russian
  • Kyrgyz Culture & Traditions. Prereq of at least 5 semesters of Russian
  • Russian through Central Asian News. Prereq of at least 6 semesters of Russian
  • Literature and Film of Central  Asia. Prereq of at least 6 semesters of Russian
  • Politics and Economy of Central Asia. Prereq of at least 6 semesters of Russian
  • Regional History – Kyrgyzstan. Prereq of at least 7 semesters of Russian
  • Kyrgyz Language. No prereq, but not advised to take both Kyrgyz and Russian at beginning level.
  • Other languages (Kazakh, Uzbek, Arabic, Tajik). Per availability of instructor, all levels; not advised to take in parallel with beginning Russian.

Travel and Cultural Program

The SRAS cultural program in Bishkek is designed to integrate language study with direct experience of Central Asian culture, history, and landscapes. Activities are closely tied to coursework, with preparation and follow-up discussions reinforcing vocabulary, comprehension, and cultural understanding.

Activities in Bishkek may include walking tours, museums, performances, workshops in traditional crafts, cooking, and music.

Excursions outside the city introduce both historical and natural landmarks and may include: 

  • Issyk-Kul region (including yurt building, meetings with eagle hunters, and Barskoon Waterfall)
  • Ata-Beyit Memorial
  • Burana Tower (ancient capital of the Karakhanid Empire)
  • Ala-Archa National Park

Optional Regional Travel

Students may expand their experience through optional travel opportunities:

  • Central Asia Travel: Semester students may join trips offered through the Central Asian Studies program to destinations such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
  • Osh: Trip to Kyrgyzstan’s southern capital, located in the Fergana Valley and boasting a rich Silk Road heritage.
  • Horse Trek: Summer multi-day trek into the mountains, engaging with nomadic traditions and landscapes.

These opportunities allow students to use Russian as a practical language across different regional settings. 

Optional Research or Volunteering

SRAS supports focused research and projects, such as for a capstone project or graduate studies. Support may be in the form of (limited) advising sessions, assistance navigating archives or other resources. In many cases this is at no additional cost, but eligibility requires submission of a research or project proposal. The final research paper should be considered for publishing in the SRAS Family of Sites. Minimum stay of 8 weeks required.

Informal volunteer opportunities are also possible if you want to be more involved with your local community abroad. We can connect you with opportunities to pursue independently at no cost.

Partner School

In Bishkek, SRAS partners with The London School of Languages and Cultures is a well-established private language school founded in 1998. The school has worked with the UNDP, the US Embassy, and various USAID projects. On campus, foreigners studying Russian and Central Asian languages mix with locals learning English. Centrally located, the school is surrounded by cafes, museums, shopping, theaters, churches, mosques, and more.

The London School prides itself on its regional and local connections and ability to immerse students in the surrounding culture and community. They offer an extensive multi-language audio-visual library, 30+ modern classrooms, and an international staff from across Central Asia.

Transcripts and Credit Transfer

This program is hosted by The London School of Languages and Cultures (LSLC) in Bishkek in cooperation with SRAS. The School of Record for this program is University of Montana (Montana, USA). Your transcript will be issued by University of Montana, facilitating credit transfer to your home institution.

RUSS 3XX Immersive Russian: Language & Culture in Central Asia

The RSL + Travel Adventure track is a distinct summer program option that combines intensive Russian language study in Bishkek with a two-week, faculty-led travel component across Central Asia.

During the first portion of the program in Bishkek, you will build your language skills through structured coursework, peer tutoring, and daily interaction. This period also prepares you for the travel component through targeted vocabulary development and thematic readings.

In the final two weeks, you will travel through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, using Russian as your primary language of communication in public settings. This portion of the program is designed to reinforce fluency through constant, real-world use—navigating transportation, engaging with local peers, and interpreting new cultural environments.

Travel includes destinations such as Almaty, Nukus, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent, combining guided visits, peer interaction, and independent exploration. Throughout, you will complete structured assignments and a final project connecting language use to regional experience.

This track is designed for students seeking a more immersive and mobile language experience and requires at least four semesters of Russian (or equivalent). This immersive experience is open to those with at least four semesters of Russian (or equivalent) and replaces 3 of your Russian Language Study credits (see Academics above).

Itinerary for Summer 2026

July 18 – Departure (overland) from Bishkek to Almaty (Kazakhstan), stopping en route to see the Tas Petroglyphs. Dinner with local guests.

July 19 – Almaty city tour, Shymbulak ski resort, lunch, free time at Kok Tobe.

July 20 – Archery workshop and lunch with local peers.

July 21 – Peer activity and/or free time to explore Almaty.

July 22 – Afternoon flight to Nukus (Uzbekistan). Overnight in Nukus.

July 23 – Visit to Igor Savistky State Art Museum. Drive to Khiva in afternoon. En route, stop for lunch at a yurt camp and to see the 2000-year-old citadels of the ancient Khorezmian Empire – Toprak Kala, Kizil Kala, and Ayaz Kala. Evening arrival in Khiva.

July 24 – Tour of the many monuments of Ichan Kala Citadel (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Traditional lunch. Free time to explore.

July 25 – Transfer by bus or train to Bukhara, arriving late afternoon. Meet up with local peers for dinner.

July 26 – Guided tour of the old city of Bukhara. Peer-organized activity (scavenger hunt). Dinner with traditional dancing and fashion show in courtyard of a beautiful madrasa.

July 27 – Bukhara morning free time. Afternoon transfer by train to Samarkand. Visit to  Registan Square in Samarkand. Traditional dinner. After-dinner visit to see Registan light show and the Gur-Emir Mausoleum illuminated.

July 28 – Trip from Samarkand to Shahrisabz to see the monuments built by Amir Temur (Tamerlane) with stops en route. Evening free time in Samarkand.

July  29 – Visits to the highly decorated Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the Shakhi Zinda necropolis and other sites. Afternoon train to Tashkent. 

July 30 – Lunch at the “Central Asian Plov Center” and then visits to Chorsu bazaar, Khastimam Architectural Complex (see oldest Koran), Place of Independence and Amir Timur Square.

July 31- Tashkent, project work, free time.

Aug 1 – Project presentations, farewell dinner.

Aug 2 – Departure.

Additional inclusions in this option: ground transport from Bishkek to Almaty, flight from Almaty to Tashkent or Nukus, all accommodations (twin rooms with breakfast), guiding/tickets, and meals as per itinerary.

Students may choose between a student dormitory (default) or a homestay (additional cost).

Dormitory: Located next to the academic building, offering convenience and easy access to classes and program activities.

Homestay: Homestays in Bishkek provide one of the most immersive language experiences across SRAS programs. Families are often larger than in other locations and may include multiple generations, creating frequent opportunities for conversation and interaction throughout the day.

Through shared meals, daily routines, and informal conversation, students engage with Russian in a natural and consistent way. For those seeking maximum language exposure outside the classroom, homestay is strongly recommended.
