Here’s a short history of the Volkonsky House-Museum in Irkutsk:
The house, which houses the museum’s exposition today, was built in 1838 in the village of Urik, Irkutsk province, where, after ten years of hard labor, the Decembrist Sergei Grigorievich Volkonsky lived with his family in a settlement. Having received permission to move to Irkutsk, the Volkonskys organized the transportation of their two-story house to the site behind the Transfiguration Church. By 1847, the house was completed and the family moved into an expanded and renovated house.
Built in the tradition of classical noble mansions, the house is marked by the peculiarities of Siberian wooden architecture. On the second floor, the homekeeper, Maria Nikolaevna, arranged a small winter garden, where even pineapples and lemons grew!
In 1985, a museum was opened in the Volkonskys’ house, where the authentic items belonging to the Decembrist families were collected. The mansion has been restored to its original appearance, the historical interiors of the house have been recreated.
A sightseeing tour of the Volkonsky House-Museum acquaints with the life, customs and occupations of the exiled noblemen, with the memorial collection of the museum, which includes genuine things of the Volkonsky, Muravyov, Yushnevsky, Ivashev, Kyukhelbeker, I.I. Pushchina, D.I. Zavalishina, G.S. Batenkov and other Decembrists. You will immerse yourself in the atmosphere of noble culture, art, and everyday life of the mid-19th century.
