Chișinău is Moldova’s political, economic, and cultural center and the base for SRAS study in the country. Romanian and Russian are both widely encountered in the capital, alongside other languages spoken by Moldova’s diverse communities, making questions of language and identity particularly visible in everyday life.
The city reflects multiple layers of Moldovan history. Romanian cultural influences, Russian imperial and Soviet legacies, and post-independence development coexist within a society increasingly oriented toward European integration. Museums, monuments, neighborhoods, markets, and public spaces provide perspectives on how these histories continue to shape language, identity, politics, and contemporary life.
Chișinău as a Regional Gateway
Chișinău provides a base for exploring Moldova and the wider region. Within Moldova, travel to places such as Gagauzia and Transnistria reveals very different linguistic, cultural, historical, and political perspectives within a relatively small country. Beyond Moldova, connections to Romania and other destinations across Southeast and Central & Eastern Europe allow students to place their experience within a broader regional context.
For students spending several weeks in Chișinău, independent travel can extend the experience beyond Moldova, providing opportunities to explore neighboring countries and compare the languages, societies, and historical influences that intersect across the region.

Student Life in Chișinău
Chișinău’s relatively compact scale makes it easy for students to become familiar with the city during a short program. Cafés, parks, markets, restaurants, and public spaces provide opportunities to explore independently and use Russian outside the classroom.
Daily life also exposes students to Moldova’s multilingual environment, where the languages heard in shops, markets, transportation, media, and conversation can shift depending on setting and community. For language students, these everyday encounters become an important part of the experience.
The program here is wonderful. All of my teachers have been extremely helpful and I have made friends both here in the dorms and with others who live in the city and find that I often have many opportunities to practice Russian outside of the classroom. Already I feel that my Russian has improved immensely, especially my listening and speaking.

Explore Chișinău with SRAS
While SRAS does not currently offer programs based in Chișinău, students may experience the country through academic travel incorporated into programs elsewhere in the region or through independent travel during their time abroad. SRAS can also work with faculty to develop custom programs that include Chișinău as a destination.
