Ongoing Efforts to Ensure Accessibility

We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 as our guiding principle for determining accessibility. These are internationally agreed-upon standards that cover a wide range of recommendations and best practices for making content useable. As we add new pages and functionality to our website, all designs, code, and content entry practices are checked against these standards.

Website accessibility is an ongoing process. We continually test content and features for WCAG 2.2 Level AA compliance and remediate any issues to ensure we meet or exceed the standards. Testing of our website is performed by our team members using industry-standard tools such as the Accessibility Checker WordPress Plugin, color contrast analyzers, keyboard-only navigation techniques, and Flesch-Kincaid readability tests.

Accessibility Features On Our Website

The following is a list of items we have included in our website to improve its accessibility:

  • Text alternatives for non-text content, such as alt text for images, has been provided.
  • Information, structure, and relationships are conveyed through appropriate HTML elements, where applicable.
  • Content is presented in the correct reading sequence and can be programmatically determined.
  • Meaning is not conveyed through color alone.
  • Text has a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or higher with its background color.
  • Text can be resized without assistive technology up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
  • All functionality is available from a keyboard, without keyboard traps.
  • Web pages do not contain anything that flashes more than three times in any one second period.
  • Animations respond to users’ reduced-motion device preferences.
  • A skip link is available on all pages to bypass header navigation elements.
  • Pages have titles that describe their topic or purpose.
  • The purpose of each link can be determined from the link text alone or from the link text together with its programmatically determined link context.
  • Headings and labels describe topic or purpose.
  • Any keyboard operable user interface has a mode of operation where the keyboard focus indicator is visible and is not entirely hidden due to author-created content.
  • Tap targets are appropriately sized.
  • The human language of each web page and each passage or prhase can be programmatically determined.
  • Errors, such as form field errors, are described to the user in text.

Where We’re Improving

In our efforts to bring our website up to standard, we are targeting the following areas:

  • Providing transcripts for audio
  • Auditing video captions for accuracy
  • Updating non-descriptive link text
  • Remediating non-website content, such as PDFs and emails
  • Testing and remediating interactive charts embedded in survey pages
