SRAS has added a week-long trip to Uzbekistan to the summer session of our Central Asian Studies program. Students on this program will now have both the opportunity to experience rural, nomadic Kyrgyz life during a weeklong horse trek through the nearby mountains and also contrast this with the Uzbekistan’s ancient culture of great cities.
We have expanded this long-standing, popular program with two main objectives in mind. First, this will give more dimension to the program’s core topics in anthropology (identity, ethnicity, and linguistic anthropology). In addition, it will give students a broader understanding of the large and diverse Central Asian region.
The program is now six weeks long (formerly five), and can be extended to ten weeks with additional language training for the remaining four weeks. Six US credits are earned for the six week program and up to twelve for the ten week program. The School of Record for this program is University of Montana.
There are still two tracks offered: anthropology, with two 3-credit courses; and anthropology/language, with three credits in Identity and Ethnicity and the rest in language.
Semester sessions of Central Asian Studies, which offer a still wider regional travel package, continue to run in their original format.
