Travel and Cultural Program

The cultural program in Yerevan is designed to augment your language and cultural education. You will be given background information on each event, encouraged to make notes or recordings, and will discuss the excursions afterwards in class and with your peer tutors. These fully integrated excursions will give you more real-world experiences from which to hear and absorb vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural information. Planned excursions include:

1. The Museum of Ancient Manuscripts
2. History Museum of Armenia
3. Garni Pagan Temple and Geghard Cave Monastery
4. Genocide Memorial Museum
5. Sergei Parajanov Museum
6. Weekend trip to Goris
7. Areni-1 Cave and Magellan Cave

Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) is a state university and higher education institution based in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Founded in 1922, the university specializes in pedagogy and the preparation of teaching staff. Named after the 19th-century Armenian writer Khachatur Abovyan, the university today cooperates with many international educational organizations including the British Council and projects financed by the European Committee. ASPU additionally hosts a "Pushkin Institute" teaching and testing center.

This program is hosted by Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) in Yerevan in cooperation with SRAS. The School of Record for this program is Stetson University (Florida, USA).

Credit transfer to your home institution is usually possible. Additionally, a US School of Record means that your program is supported by and documented by an accredited US university.

Students will stay with a host family, inclusive of half board (breakfast and supper). Homestays in Yerevan vary, sometimes housing you with a family and sometimes with a single, older person or couple. In all cases, however, your host(s) will be experienced and ready to include you in conversations and daily life. Home stays are a phenomenal way to practice your Russian language and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Yerevan is Armenia’s lively and welcoming capital, offering a unique blend of Armenian, Soviet, and modern youth cultures. From its history under the Russian Empire and USSR, Russian is still widely spoken across the city. Yet Armenia's roots run back to the beginning of civilization. Evidence of winemaking in the region dates back to before 4000 BC, with it still taking pride of place in Armenian's delicious cuisine. Armenia became the first Christian state in the fourth century, and this also remains central to Armenia's proud identity. Its architecture, culture, and modern history reveal its still-deep interconnectedness with the Persian and Turkish cultures that surround it, making it a gateway for understanding the wider region. The city of Yerevan is affordable, accessible, and endlessly engaging with museums and theaters, youth nightlife, unique architecture, and an abundance of greenspace. Accessing incredible nature and historical sites outside of Yerevan is very easy – and a must for any visitor.

• Federal aid can help pay for your program if your university pre-approves credit transfer and agrees to manage payment. Check with SRAS and your university for details.
• All Scholarships and Grants that we know of that can be applied to our programs are listed on our site.
• SRAS Program Grants are stackable!
• SRAS Ambassadors can write while abroad or educate students at home after their return - and earn stipends!
• SRAS Online Research Internships award partial scholarships for study abroad.

   Some universities have deadlines for study abroad that are much earlier than SRAS deadlines -- so involve your home university's study abroad office in the process as early as possible!
