History of NGU
NGU was founded at break-neck speed to supply scientists to the newly founded Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In May of 1959, the USSR's Ministry of Education ordered the university constructed and a call for student applications was sent out in June of that year. After piles of applications were processed, classes began in August. Of course, this was not enough time to actually build a university. So, classes were held on the campus of a local high school and students lived in tents in the surrounding woods. Today, the university has a campus and dormitory, and still supplies 80% of the staff of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which holds about 45.5% of all patents issued by the Russian Federation.
