Welcome from SRAS! See what's new!

As the new school year gets underway, SRAS has lots of new offerings to announce!  You will find our program menu has been vastly simplified and program selection, streamlined.  You will also find that there are new selections and new twists on our old programs.  The usual structure of our newsletter has also been modified to briefly introduce you to the major changes.  Following issues will return to our standard structure.

Vestnik, the Journal of Russian and Asian Studies, is also gearing up for its next issue, which will focus mostly on "Russian Perspectives, Russian Transitions," featuring papers concerning pivotal points in Russia's history and Russian perspectives on them.  From the Mongols to Peter the Great to Glasnost, all issues are being considered.  If you are interested in submitting material, please visit our website from the link above, and write jwilson@sras.org

New! SRAS Program Structure

Building a custom program with SRAS just got easier!  Our offerings have been simplified to "main courses" and "side dishes."  Ordering your program is as easy as ordering food in a Russian restaurant!  (We could probably even safely say much easier!)  Check out our Program Overview page to find out more!

New! SRAS announces new internships and funding!

The School of Russian and Asian Studies is seeking qualified, self-starter interns for the Fall Semester.  The internships are based in Moscow, Russia and will deal with pedagogy, journalism and marketing.  They are unique in the Russian market in that they are paid!  (albeit small) We expect the positions to be offered each semester.  If you or your students are interested, please see our site for more information

We have also provided more information on how to find scholarships and financial aid to Russia.  One new page of interest is a full page on employment opportunities in and concerning Russia.  Subsidize your studies, or plan your career path!

New programs offered!

SRAS is now offering Independent Study with FSA, LSA, or Direct Enrolment options.  You pick the topic and we help you find resources, contacts, and translators in Russia.  Perfect for students hoping to write a thesis or dissertation on Russia.

SRAS’s new International Program is also still gearing up.  Although still being finalized, this program is set to offer a core of classes in language, history, and culture, as well as lots of electives in everything from economics to theatre to journalism to advertising.  Keeping checking the site for updates!

Culture: Becky Bavinger Saves the World

Becky with a new friend

Recent SRAS graduate Becky Bavinger has just finished up an education program and internship in St. Petersburg.  Her internship, in a shelter run by Doctors of the World for youths, is part of her life-long comittment to improving the lives of others.  We caught her on her last day in Russia for an interview about social issues, studying in St. Pete, and families that don't always "get it."

Language: Перо и Шпага - The Pen and the Sword

The English proverb "The pen is mightier than the sword" has no direct translation into Russian.  This is perhaps, as Jules Verne, professor emeritus at UCLA recently pointed out on SEELANGS, because the opposite has been generally true in the Russian experience due to heavy censorship.  Mayakovsky’s "Я хочу, чтоб к штыку приравняли перо" comes perhaps the closest, but it is only a wish that the pen were at least equal to the sword.  Bulgakov said, "рукописи не горят," which might contain the thought, but only if discerned as subtext.  Other Russian phrases implying the strength of the pen include "острое перо" and "бойкое перо" and the popular collocation "перо и шпага."  But none of these, tellingly, place the power of the pen directly over that of the sword.
