The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) is seeking qualified, self-starter interns for specially formulated, scholarship-eligible NGO internships based in Moscow or St. Petersburg, Russia. We expect these positions to be offered each semester.
The reasons for this new program are several. First, we wish to encourage our students to be more pro-active while in Russia, to seek out more immersive language experiences, to meet more people who live and work in Russia, and to use their time abroad to maximize their resume. Second, we have recently come in contact with NGOs who can provide exceptionally active and interesting internships which can serve a wide variety of interests. Third, we believe in supporting these NGOs to work social change in Russia.
About the Positions
Principal duties will be combined to meet the applying intern’s interests and abilities.

Translating: work mostly with NGOs' websites and receive credit on those pages contributed to.

Pedagogy and Training: teach English and other subjects, assist in inclusive education seminars, assist in corporate trainings.

Law: Assist lawyers (mostly in pro-bono rights cases) in their work. (Requires strong Russian skills)

Journalism: Research and write original articles to be published on websites, brochures, and press releases.

Grant Writing: Provide assistance in writing grants and project proposals.

Management: Assist directors in managing employees and offices.

Marketing: Assist NGOs become better known by helping with fundraising and in creating websites and brochures.

Information Systems: Help maintain and/or build websites for NGOs.

Other: many other professional opportunities are available in social work, psychology, and others for students with prior education in the fields and strong Russian skills.
Qualifications needed:

An excellent knowledge of English grammar;

Junior or above (graduate students preferred);

Excellent written and spoken communications skills (at least in English);

Experience or education in one or more of the principle duties;

Ability to meet deadlines;

Flexibility in performing a range of tasks;

Open-minded, self-motivated, structured, pro-active, service-driven;

A very good working knowledge of Russian is required for most positions;

One semester (or summer) minimum comittment - academic year prefered.
About the Scholarship The scholarship comes in the form of discounted internship enrollment costs and/or a end-of-program refund. See this page for standard program costs. All students from FSA, RSL, or Direct Enrollment programs are eligible to apply at the discounted rate of $350. Accepted applicants will sign contracts to work 15-20 hours on average per week and/or to complete certain pre-assigned tasks. If the contract is maintained through the end of the internship, and the intern receives a positive letter of recommendation from their assigned manager at the NGO, the intern will receive a program refund of $200. Scholarship interns recieve all the same services as all other SRAS interns.
Please note that, like all SRAS internships, these scholarships are only awarded to students who are enrolled in one of our language programs and who will be arriving in Russia on a student visa. No internships will be awarded or guaranteed until the applicant has arrived in Russia and has been interviewed by SRAS and the sponsoring NGO. The NGO maintains the right to reject or discontinue any intern during the application, interview, or working process. In the case of a discontinued internship, every effort will be made to find another suitable internship.

About the NGOs
A variety of organizations are participating in this program. They currently include those that work with the disabled, with immigrants, and with children and offer a wide variety of work experiences. Students will be told the name of NGOs interested in their application only after the NGO has agreed to hold an interview.
How to Apply? Applications for Fall Semester must be recieved by May 1st. However, internships are currently open for students who wish to come earlier. To apply, please email the materials listed below to Josh Wilson, Vice Director of Programs, at jwilson@sras.org:
1. Resume; 2. Cover letter (with mention of which program and which university you will be studying with while in); 3. One two-page writing sample; 4. One ten-page writing sample (both samples should concern Russia); 5. One letter of recommendation from a former employer (the employer may send this directly via email) 6. Applicants who do not indicate that they are absolute beginners in Russian should also take the Level 1 TORFL sample test on our website.
