Ballets Russes 2009 Russian Revel May 16 - 23rd Emerson College, Boston, MAOn May 22nd, 2008 at the Cutler Majestic Theater at Emerson College in Boston’s Theater District, Ballets Russes 2009 will present an exciting evening of Russian cultural performance. The presentation of Russian performers will begin at seven p.m. and will last for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. The purpose of the evening is to celebrate the Russian origins of the Ballets Russes, Serge Diaghilev’s renowned company, which Ballets Russes 2009 will celebrate on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, from May 16th through May 23rd, 2009. To lead off the evening, Ballets Russes 2009 will present a pas de deux from Le Pavillion d’ Armide, the first ballet commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. Composed by Nicholas Tcherepnine and choreographed originally by Michael Fokine, this ballet is rarely, if ever, performed. The pas de deux will be staged by Andres Liepa, the Russian choreographer, and danced by two performers from his company. Nina Ananiashvili of the American Ballet Theater will then dance the “Dying Swan” from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Three Moscow-trained, Russian bass soloists will follow the dance performance with song recitals from Boris Godunov and Prince Igor, works associated with the Russian Seasons in Paris that predated the Ballets Russes. The soloists are Mikhail Guzhov of the Bolshoi Theater, Vladimir Kudashev of the Moscow Theater “New Opera,” and Alexey Tikhomirov of the “Helikon-Opera.” Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the Russian poet, will conclude the evening’s presentation. Yevtushenko will recite some of his most powerful and moving verse, accompanied by a celebrated American actor, who will read Mr. Yevtushenko’s work in English translation. At the conclusion of the Cutler Majestic presentation, a select number of Ballets Russes 2009 patrons will proceed by trolley to the Four Seasons Hotel for a gala dinner at which at which Ballets Russes 2009 will be pay tribute with others in the Boston arts community to Yevtushenko, who is a living testament to the genius of the Russian artistic spirit.
